Secondary School Program
Our secondary scholarship programs offers support for students living in a 25 mile radius from our office in Deschapelles, from Liancourt to LaChapelle (the Artibonite Valley). Students attend schools that are in proximity to their house. Most students live within 4 miles of a school and many walk each day to and from school. We support 28 schools in the area. Annual tuition, book fees and uniforms for a secondary student averages about $300 a year.
No funds are given to the students. Our employees pay the tuition and fees directly to each school administrator. The schools do not supply the books, so our program supplies the books as well. Each grade has a curriculum that is established by the state and the books for this curriculum are printed in Port-au-Prince and distributed to all areas of Haiti. We purchase the books directly from Port-au-Prince at a better rate and distribute them to each student from our office. Each student is required to wear a uniform unique to each school. We have a local woman who manages the uniform purchases. She measures each student, learns what school they attend and contract local tailors and seamstresses to make uniforms. A new uniform is made for each student each year.
Our Program Administrator reviews the report cards mid-year. If the student is struggling with poor grades, the Program Administrator will speak with the student, a parent, and the school administrator to see how these grades may be improved. Students and parents are reminded that an average grade below 58% places their child in jeopardy of losing their scholarship. We offer some tutoring in the spring for those students deficient in key areas, and we hope in future years to increase out tutoring efforts. We have noticed through the years that math is difficult for most Haitians. This year we hope to initiate a program where university students, on their summer and winter breaks, offer remedial courses in the areas in which they excel. We have a large area on our office grounds perfect for this type of student assistance. This would also offer an opportunity for the student to “give back” to the program.
